Jidori: The Yakitori Craze Comes to Covent Garden

After its crazy success in Dalston, the pretty Japanese canteen by Australian chef Brett Redman (behind Elliot’s, The Pavilion in Victoria Park and The Richmond) and Natalie Lee-Joe put down their chopsticks in the heart of the West End last month, right near Covent Garden.  Here you will find the same clean aesthetic from the pastel tones of the walls to the plates and the fun, childlike spirit.

Jidori, what is it? The Japanese free range chicken rolls gave the name to the restaurant, although the poultry here comes from Yorkshire.  On the menu: neither sushi nor udon in sight, but yakitoris, savory skewers that explore the animal from A to Z, under the eye of chef Shunta Matsubara.

Totally fun:  cooked on the grill with Kama-Asa Shoten charcoal especially imported from Japan for the occasion, we cheerfully share the skewers with chicken thighs and baby onions, garlic and shiso and bacon (£4-4.50 for two)...If you prefer someone to help you decide, opt for the chef’s Omakase menu, with the best of the menu served to you (£18 per person).

More of a veggie? Jump on the skewers of aubergine in miso butter or shitake mushrooms (£3.50- 4 for two).  And definitely don’t miss the cucumbers marinated in sesame-chili: to die for (£4)!

To drink: we love the homemade cocktails, from the frozen Margarita with yuzu (£6.50) to the Akita, which delicately mixes gin, sake and elderflower (£10).

Finally, to finish off on a sweet note, we love the ginger ice cream with miso caramel, sweet potato chips and black sesame praline that already has all of East London buzzing (£5).

The best kept secret: aventure down to the basement to add some karaoke to your evening…

Open Tuesday to Thursday 6pm to 10pm, Friday and Saturday 6pm to 11pm
