L'Ami Malo: The Hippest Crêperie

Combine “l’ami” (friend) and “Saint Malo” (a super cute Breton town) and you get L’Ami Malo- this creperie can only offer you something good in combining the two! Recently opened in the super trendy Spitalfields market, the happy spot takes on a mix of genres. With a base of buckwheat flour (naturally gluten-free), the galette is served traditionally...or rolled up like maki sushi! An audacious Asian “update” imagined by Emilien Lesourd and Vincent Couvreur with chef Williams Guillemot.

As for the drinks, check out Le Moulin, the clandestine bar tucked in the back of the restaurant that offers cider-based or Calvados cocktails, along with a range of artisanal Breton ciders and French wines, all organic, of course. Between L’Ami Malo and us, we are sure that friendship will last!

The crepe to try: smoked salmon maki rolls, sprinkled with capers and caviar, super surprising and chocked full of yumminess.

The Merlin: The Most Enchanted Crêperie

Hidden in the North of London, this creperie is the delight of locals in the Clapton neighbourhood. Here, the menu is the same proportions of the space: small (12 savoury crepes, 11 sweet) but high quality. Served on porcelain plates that would make your grandmother green with envy, the galettes and crepes aren’t over the top but are garnished exclusively with seasonal products. The Merlin proposes a special crepe each month, proof of the freshness of the products. For the buckwheat flour (gluten-free), the owner chose to supply it direct from a Breton windmill. Magical crepes can be found here, like the name of the restaurant chosen as a wink to the legendary magician.

What do we drink? Cider, of course, like the excellent non-pasturized Cidre de Rhuys, made from hand-cultivated Breton apples.

Kova: The Most Instagrammable Crêperie

A Japanese patisserie: what does that have to do with a crepe? The mille crepes, of course, one of the signature desserts of this place that has been making buzz since its opening in Soho. The ingredients of its success? The wow factor of the superposition of crepes, filled with four different flavours: the very popular matcha flavour, classics chocolate and vanilla, and the exotic coconut. For the most addicted, there are also limited editions produced each season.

To drink, don’t hope for a bowl of cider here. Here, it’s tea to tickle your tastebuds. The patisseries offers a range of organic teas, hand-picked in the Shizuoka and Kyoto regions. Doesn’t match with matcha? Earl Grey, camomile and other flavours are also available. Kova is one to try, we are telling you.

Mamie's: The Most Ciderifique Creperie

A crepe without cider, it’s like salt without pepper: it’s just not done! In any case, it’s the philosophy of Aymeric Peurois, the Breton behind Mamie’s. (Mamie = Nan in French.) To wash down his galettes and crepes with savoury and fun Frenchie names (the Bonaparte, Magritte or Duras), the young man offers you a dip into the Cidrotheque. Located in the lower level of the restaurant, the space proposes specially selected elixirs from the best Breton producers along with English, Irish, Swedish, Belgian and Kiwi. All served up in a super trendy atmosphere, after placing your drink order on iPads. Nothing at all like your nan’s place!

The crepe to try: The Henry Des, a crepe with Nutella, salted caramel and marshmallow. Pure yum.

Crème de la crêpe: The Most British Crêperie

Taking charge of the crepe making at this creperie tucked into the lower level of the buzzy Covent Garden market is Nick. A name that doesn’t sound very Breton, that’s for sure. However, the owner has made up for it by learning to be a master crepe maker in France. Once his skills were established, the Scotsman returned to his native lands where he quickly gained followers with his “crepette,” a personal recipe of mini crepes. Original and easy to eat, the dessert has given him a cult following. Strengthened by his success, Nick finished by posing his crepe making machines in Covent Garden where tourists and gourmet lovers come to try his crepes with traditional British fillings. Here, crepes are filled with Brit faves like cheddar, Marmite and beans! On the sweet side, flavours like Banoffee pie and strawberry cheesecake are worth every bite. Purists will be scandalized, but too bad for them!

The crepe to try: “Beanz meanz brunch,” a crepe filled with Heinz red beans that won’t leave you hungry….

The Crêpe Factory: The Most Kid-Friendly Creperie

Behind the kitschy shopfront, this creperie is the paradise of little (and big) gourmets. In this family run business led by Decio, the recipes are made to order and range from the traditional crepe Suzette to Nutella, lemon and sugar, and on to original versions with seafood or asparagus with butter sauce. So many yummy reasons to try a crepe here.

The extra touch: the stand of artisanal ice cream. Produced by Romeu, the talented ice cream maker of the restaurant, the amazing flavours have tempted more than one gourmet! You would have to be totally frozen to not try at least one.

The crepe to try: the Mancara, a chicken and peanut butter crepe with cheddar. Strange on paper, but excellent on the plate!
